Andy Roddick ensured that he will head to Wimbledon in some very decent form, after progressing to the final of the AEGON International tournament in Eastbourne. The big hitting American was leading 6-3 3-1 when Steve Darcis was forced to withdraw with a back complaint.

Despite his opponent struggling with injury, Roddick controlled every part of the tie, and looked in great touch, as he prepares for his 12th appearance at the All England Club.

However, the 29-year-old has proved he is still one of the most effective players on grass in the game.

The former US Open champion will know his chances of winning Wimbledon are getting slimmer each year; the live in-play betting previews barely gave the American a second glance, when setting a benchmark of 150/1.

Blustery conditions hampered both players, but Roddick managed the winds better than his Belgian opponent did, using his experience to race into a one set lead. Darcis battled bravely in the second set, before accepting defeat in his bid to play on with his injury.

Roddick admitted that it had been tough to play in the horrendous conditions, but made it clear that he was just happy to have booked his place in the final.

The experienced three-time Wimbledon finalist added that he was pleased to have continued his promising recent form, going into the third Grand Slam of the season.

“I can’t remember much tougher conditions that I’ve played in. That wind out there is frightening. It’s tough. It’s not as much as about tennis today as just kind of getting through it.

“This week has worked out. Regardless of what happens, I’ll go into Wimbledon with some wins behind me, and some confidence on a surface I’m very comfortable on, you know, so I feel like I got my game back a little bit this week.”
