As Roger Federer waltzed past world number one Novak Djokovic in the semi final to seal his place in the final of Wimbledon at the All England Club, many people opined that the grass court surface, the Swiss player’s favorite surface had handed him the advantage over the Serbian ace, who is more accustomed to playing on the hard courts than the grass courts.

However, The Djoker does not believe in what is being said about FedEx and admitted that the Swiss Master deserved to be in the final of the greatest spectacle on the tennis calendar.

Federer is also in line to take over at the top of the tennis rankings from Djokovic, a position that he last held back in May 2010 after being on top for a record number of weeks. Continue reading Federer Deserves Top Spot, says Djokovic

DJOKOVIC FINISHES QUICKLY

World number one Novak Djokovic took just three sets to beat his young opponent Ryan Harrison at Wimbledon on Wednesday. The match took place in the evening under the closed roof of Centre Court, which perhaps slowed the Serb up enough for Harrison to at least steal a few games, finishing as it did 6-4 6-4 6-4. Djokovic never looked quite at his flowing best, but doesn’t yet need to be in just the second round of seven, and did easily enough to progress without much drama. The only moment that took all his concentration was to save 3 break points from 2-3 0-40 down in the second set, and once this mini-crisis was over, Djokovic was comfortable again. “I thought it was a very exciting match to be a part of as a player,” he said afterwards, “and I thought the crowd enjoyed it as well.”

The closed roof did play its part, with players so far this year generally feeling as though the court plays quite differently when covered. The humidity increases slightly, but the main factor is thought to be the lack of airflow which means that the air feels a lot warmer than it is – as if you were playing in oppressively calm weather. “It’s hard to prepare for that because you play indoor match on the Centre Court maybe once every couple of years,” Djokovic said. “2010 was my only match under the roof aside from tonights match. It is quite different. I think the lights were really good. The attendance was fantastic. The crowd enjoyed it. It was a spectacular match from a players point of view. Sometimes its good for a change to be under the roof. It makes it more interesting as well I think, if you go to the late hours.”

Andy Roddick ensured that he will head to Wimbledon in some very decent form, after progressing to the final of the AEGON International tournament in Eastbourne. The big hitting American was leading 6-3 3-1 when Steve Darcis was forced to withdraw with a back complaint.

Despite his opponent struggling with injury, Roddick controlled every part of the tie, and looked in great touch, as he prepares for his 12th appearance at the All England Club.

However, the 29-year-old has proved he is still one of the most effective players on grass in the game. Continue reading Roddick Finds Grass-court Form

It was with much admiration that tennis fans cheered Venus Williams return to grand slam victory as she overcame a first round scare to secure her place in the second round of the French Open. The eight time grand slam winner and twenty one grand slams in all types of tennis, has been out of the game since being diagnosed with a fatigue inducing chronic illness called Sjorgrens disease. After returning to the game around six months ago, Venus has taken some courageous steps in her attempts to return to the number one spot in women’s tennis.

After her absence she has fallen to number 52 in the world rankings, however her victory over Argentinean Paula Ormaecha over three sets (4-6 6-1 6-3). Williams had a shaky start to the game and was unable to recreate her powerful serving game until the second set where she was able to find some rhythm and began to dominate the game in typical William sister fashion, before finishing her opponent in the third set with a convincing 6-3 victory.

The thirty one year old American who is sister to world number five Serena Williams, is hoping to put in a strong performance at the French Open before returning to her most prolific tournament at Wimbledon which she has won five times, with the last victory coming in 2008. If Venus can re capture her performance level before the lengthy hiatus from the game, she will certainly be a big contender going into the Wimbledon championship. In term of success at the French open this may come in the form of making it into the later rounds and testing her fitness levels ahead of a summer of tennis.

Anna Kournikova is a retired tennis professional player who managed to become famous on the back of the looks as opposed to her tennis ability. She is known the world over as a tennis player, even though she never won a single WTA singles title!

It is not true to say that Kournikova never performed as such – indeed at one stage she reached the heady heights of World number 8 in 2000, whilst with partner Martina Hingis she actually won over 10 Grand slam titles in doubles. She and Martina became known as the Spice Girls in the tennis circuit due to their beautiful looks.

She won the European Champion and the Italian Open Junior Tournament when she was only 14 years of age. At the age of 18 she was crowned the ITF World Championship U-18. Kournikova went on to play the 1995 Wimbledon Girls Championship in both singles and double.

TSONGA BLASTS UMPIRE

French tennis player Jo Wilfried Tsonga has dropped a potential bombshell by claiming that the chair umpire in his Quarter Final match against Rafael Nadal was biased towards the Spaniard and this was evident in some of the calls that were made by him throughout the duration of the match. Nadal, who is fighting to win his first ever title at the Miami Masters defeated the Frenchman by a score of 5-2, 5-7, 6-4 and when he heard the comments made by Tsonga, he was quick to dismiss them as rubbish.

Tsonga made his complaints heard throughout the match and afterwards as well saying that whenever any border line call went against him, the chair umpire for the match Damian Steiner was extremely reluctant to overrule them. According to Jo Wilfried Tsonga, it was extremely unfair on the part of the umpire, adding further that whenever it was close for Rafael, he would never call it as ‘out’. Moreover, he also stated that if Nadal did not like him anymore, he would not be chair umpire so many times in so many Semi Final and Final matches, in a way, pointing his finger at the former world number one.

He further added that he lost his concentration once he started to keep an eye out for the border line calls in the case he needed to challenge them, thereby costing him the match. Many players have, since the introduction of hawk eye, stated that it makes the umpires more reluctant to overrule the line calls by the linesmen but no one has accused an umpire of such a crime, so to speak.

However, Nadal vehemently denied the claims of Jo Wilfried Tsonga, saying that his frustration at not being able to perform well got the better of him and it was just its effects.
