Marin Cilic is eyeing another Grand Slam
Marin Cilic is looking to add one more to his Slam titles’ tally this year. Cilic has just had one Slam title under his belt which he had clinched the previous season, getting better of Kei Nishikori at Flushing Meadows.
Nishikori was seeded higher than Cilic in that tournament and probably, was the favourite in the lead up to the final. But, Cilic was a far better player on the day.
The 26-year old would have hoped to be able to build on to that glory in the early parts of 2015 and win a few more tournaments, but, a major arm injury kept him out of the scenes for good 15 weeks.
It was in the BNP Paribas Open recently that Cilic made his return and suffered a defeat straightaway taking on Juan Monaco of Argentina. That defeat was always on the cards though as Cilic was coming from a long layoff and without much hit.
Cilic reckons he would be back to his best by the time the Wimbledon Championships come along. Cilic had a great time at All England Club last time around as he had absolutely stormed his way to Round of 8 beating some very good players. But, in the quarters, he ran into Novak Djokovic and got ousted.
This season though, the 26-year old is dreaming to go all the way. According to Cilic, the reason behind the vast improvement in his grass court play is Goran Ivanisevic, the man who has been coaching him over the last year or so.
Ivanisevic definitely knows a thing or two about playing on grass courts as he has been a Wimbledon Champion of once. It’s worth seeing how he makes Cilic go in the competition in a few months’ time against the likes of some of the top players in the rankings.
