Azarenka Set To Reappear

The last time that Victoria Azarenka was seen taking part in a professional match was about 100 days ago. A foot injury had kept her out of the game since then, but, now, she is all set to make an appearance on the tour again. Next week, she would lock horns with Camila Giorgi of Italy in her first match in the Aegon international tennis tournament.

Azarenka has been having hits since the last couple of weeks, but, for any player no matter of what standard he/she is, match practice is very, very important. If you are going into a tournament without match practice, you are most likely to look rusty at least in your first 2-3 matches. So, the Belarusian player can’t be expected to bring out her top game straightaway. But, yes, as much time she spends out there on the court, she will only get better.

Talking to the press yesterday, Azarenka said, “As soon as I started having no pain, I decided to have light practice. I have been keen to play and I am glad that finally tomorrow is the day when I am going to be on the court again taking somebody on.”

“I have had some good practice sessions, but, as we all know that practicing and playing in the match are two different things. However, I am pretty hopeful that I would be able to do well.”

It’s just three tournaments that Azarenka has taken part in this season. Two were right at the start of the season i.e. the Brisbane International Tennis Tournament and the Australian Open, while, the third one was the BNP Paribas Open from which she got knocked out pretty early.

Azarenka’s position in the WTA rankings at the moment is no. 8.

Djokovic Never Went Back On Form

Novak Djokovic had taken the tennis world by surprise by winning three Grand Slams during the year 2011. Except at the Roland Garros, he had been absolutely destructive at the other three slam venues that year. He had made legends like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal look ordinary and people all of a sudden started backing him to dominate the men’s category for at least the next 3-4 years, but, it wasn’t to be.

The Serbian didn’t have a year like 2011 again. He won a couple of slams in 2012 too and one slam in 2013. He is still the no. 2 player in the world, but, the way he had dominated in 2011, people haven’t seen that kind of domination again from him.

Djokovic’s biggest problem in the last couple of years has been his tendency of not rising to the occasion. He makes it to the final or semi final round of almost all the majors and then on the big day, he fails to lift his game. Out of the last 6 Grand Slam finals that he has played, he has just managed to win one. This is really concerning for a player of his potential.

Djokovic needs to realize that he must make the opportunities count if he has to include himself in the list of legends. If he doesn’t do that, he would just be remembered as a good player, not great.

The no. of Grand Slam singles title won by Djokovic so far in his career is 6. That number could easily have been 10 if Djokovic had won most of his finals in the recent past.

The Serbian is 27 years of age at the moment which means he is going through the peak time of his career. This is the time when he can win titles regularly and dominate the world. This is the time for him to convert himself from a good player to a great player.

Rafael Nadal throws Andy Murray out of French Open final

July 2, 2014

On Friday as the blazing sun shone all over the court, Rafael Nadal literally crushed Andy Murray and grabbed his spot in the finale of the French Open 2014. In order to bag the title trophy, Nadal has to face off and win the battle against Novak Djokovic and stay in his rank of No. 1, and this is definitely something he deserves.

The Spanish ace was so stunning on the court that the scoreline was of 6-3, 6-2, 6-1. This score wasn’t only a huge embarrassment for Murray, but also Nadal commented that if she went ahead for the fourth set, the symmetry in the score would have continued all the way to 6-0. The match went ahead for one hour and forty minutes post which Murray was out of the semi finals, almost ridiculously. This match by far was Murray’s worst defeat in grand slam.

Commenting on the match and how his experience was to take on Nadal, Murray commented that this match was definitely the worst one he had played against Nadal. He further went on saying that he was much disappointed with how the match went and he didn’t give himself a chance on court. He wasn’t able to make the game at all hard for Nadal, who easily defeated him set after set. Although it’s difficult to control what goes on in the game completely however he would like a few days off to think about how he messed the game up.

He could have finished the game much quicker in tad too many sets this week, and he has absolutely no one to blame but him for this mess. Post his surgery he played a lot in the past couple of weeks and going on the grass might just help him.

There is some very good news for the Juan Martin Del Potro fans. The Argentinean is well and truly on his way to match fitness and he has made it clear that he is looking to take part in the Malaysia Open which is going to start in a couple of months’ time.

It’s been a while since Del Potro had played his last match on the tour. He had featured in the first round in the doubles competition of the BNP Paribas Open despite his wrist being injured, but, he felt a lot of inconvenience during that game and after that, he decided to opt for surgery.

Del Potro went through the surgery in the last week of March and his recovery has been pretty smooth since then. He has started to have a few hits and a few days back, he even uploaded a video file on a social networking site in which he could be seen practicing.

Del Potro also posted a message for his fans on the same social networking site. He wrote, “Hello to everyone. There is some news that I want to share with you all. I have started practicing a little bit. I am still trying to be careful though. As you guys can see in the video, my wrist is bandaged. I don’t want to jump steps in this recovery period.”

Del Potro had actually started the ongoing season with a bang by securing victory in the final of the Apia International Sydney Tennis Tournament. He entered the round of 8 at Rotterdam as well, but, thereafter, he established the wrist injury because of which he is still out.

As far as Del Potro’s position in the ATP World rankings is concerned, it’s 7th at the moment.
